Christmas with Numicon

The children in Ganges were recently commissioned to create our school entry for the Advent window displays popping up around the local area. Each day in Advent a household will decorate one of their windows with a Christmas scene to brighten up these dark winter evenings. As school does not have a window directly next to the road we have made our Christmas scene just the right size to attach to the bottom gate. As you can see we had many great ideas and creative use of the numicon tiles we use regularly in maths to assist us with our learning. Blue 10 tiles proved useful as legs for Santa or a reindeer and orange 1 tiles were just perfect for baubles on a Christmas tree. We are the 8th day of Advent and our display will be all lit up as the children leave for home on Friday.

Testing the speed of sound

Last week we did a very messy experiment, we used a funnel, a balloon, a spoon, some flour, a pin and a stopwatch. We scooped the flour into the funnel with a spoon, the flour from the funnel went into the balloon. We blew up the balloon and then tied it in a knot. In this picture you can see a blown up balloon, you can see flour in the bottom of the balloon. There were half of us at one end and the other half at the other side of the playground. One half had a stopwatch and the other half had the balloons with the flour in. This is me popping a balloon with flour inside it got all over my jumper it was very fun to pop. My partner was timing me as I popped it it took 0.0119 seconds for the sound to travel to the bottom of the playground. I decided to pop the balloon on my head and my mum did not get angry luckily. An Advent maths puzzle

The children of Ganges class created a difficult maths puzzle for themselves as the period of Advent came around. As school is only open for eleven days in the month of December the problem was how were they going to have every single one of the thirty children in class open a door on the new Advent display? Well they soon figured out that 30 divided by 11 doesn't work so what were they to do? Then after some intense discussions it became clear. They need to open the advent calendar three times a day for nine days, 9 x 3 = 27, which leaves two for the tenth day and the final one for the eleventh day at school, perfect. The new schedule is open one after morning registration, another mid morning with the third door being opened following afternoon registration. If you are wondering what happens when the chocolates have run out on our small advent calendar, well, we get to choose from a box of chocolates.
